AVID
Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting schools and districts in their efforts to close the opportunity gap. By creating student-centered classrooms where scholars develop the strategies and skills to access rigorous academic content, AVID seeks to create equitable learning environments in which all students can thrive.
AVID represents both an elective course as well as a school-wide approach that focuses school-based efforts to improve instruction, systems, leadership, and culture. To create a consistent experience for students across their day, the AVID Site Team helps to design and implement professional development for staff aimed at integrating teaching practices that support students in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading.
Seaside Middle School supports eight AVID Elective courses (four 6th grade, two 7th grade, and two 8th grade classes). Students in the AVID Elective build community while developing skills such as organizing materials, taking focused notes, and participating in inquiry-based tutorials in order to support their success in other coursework. Additionally, AVID Elective students engage in college and career exploration by examining different career options and visiting local colleges.
